Today's the Summer Solstice. Originally written June 21st, 2006. For a while now it's been important to me to celebrate earthy-based seasons such as this in our home. For instance, at the Winter Solstice we celebrate with a yearly Dark Party, where we invite friends to come dressed in black and bring dark foods and a candle. After we munch on the Edgar Allen Bean Dip and Fear Not the Valley of the Fudge and sip on the blac… Continue Reading

This weekend we decided to take a road trip to visit a National Forest of old growth red and white pine trees, that due to a surveying error, were spared the axe of the loggers of Minnesota in the 1800’s. We found the Lost Forty Acres Park through research on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website, as we did not find the park listed on any of our state maps. I love spending time in old growth forests, among trees that h… Continue Reading

I click, then throw him a treat that he's learned follows the click and then when he stops searching for more treats and eventually lies down the process starts over again. How it lifts the hems of green things, high-fives the pineconed crowns of spruce. The wind is always switching, dropping off, coming up, dying down. We fall for it every time. . . . For frivolous wind, we open our w… Continue Reading
Definition: Candelabra A large, branched, candlestick (slang) A person who is happier when one or more beeswax candles are burning (personal slang) A friendly, semi-mocking term applied to me when my fervor over beeswax candles exceeds my Sweet Baboo’s limits of listening. Candles are my passion, and I have been able to bring candles into many conversations quite successfully, though some may think there is little to say … Continue Reading

Beeswax captured our attention ten years ago. We have researched bees and their relationship with humans all the way back to the pharaohs, who were buried with clay jars of honey to provide sweet delicacies in the afterlife. Prehistoric people raided hive trees, and ate the honey with beeswax in its comb form. Bees have pollinated our crops and provided us with wax to burn. In Western Europe beeswax candles were very important to light d… Continue Reading
