Beeswax captured our attention ten years ago. We have researched bees and their relationship with humans all the way back to the pharaohs, who were buried with clay jars of honey to provide sweet delicacies in the afterlife. Prehistoric people raided hive trees, and ate the honey with beeswax in its comb form. Bees have pollinated our crops and provided us with wax to burn. In Western Europe beeswax candles were very important to light dark medieval churches. In the 15th century part of the wages of the king's Lord Steward were paid in beeswax.

The first candle that Kathryn and I ever worked on together was a large white paraffin candle that Kathryn had "rescued." It needed three wicks to burn well but only had two, so Kathryn researched wicks and finally found a third wick to thread into the candle. The candle was brought to an impromptu gathering the day before the wedding of a friend's daughter. The four of us sat around the candle for most of the afternoon taking care of its new wick and dipping simple flowers into the molten wax. We made a border of waxed flowers, and brought the candle that night to an outdoor cafe. It was the much-admired sensation of the evening. At the end of our dinner, we presented the candle to the bride-to-be who couldn't have been happier with this memento. Kathryn met her future partner that night, as he was also drawn to the candle, and she to him by his evident courage in approaching a table full of laughing women.

Kathryn and I noticed how a candle helps not only to create a sacred space but helps us to recognize any space as sacred. We have also worked together as facilitators of groups and leaders, and used Purest Light candles during meetings. While we were coaching clients through difficult situations we kept a candle lit and it seemed to bring out the best in all of us. We have been able to witness first-hand how people naturally congregate towards the flame, and how the subtle light and honey scent create a sense of calm and inspire focus. At home, I like to keep a candle burning in whatever room I'm working. This reminds me that no matter what I'm doing, I have the choice to be acting out my highest vision of myself. Whenever I trim the wick or look over at the inviting flame or stop to enjoy the calming scent of beeswax, it is a cue to me to be awake to the moment I am experiencing.
